There are celebrations that are beautiful, and then there are spaces that make you stop completely in your tracks. For me, those are the only experiences worth creating.

When I designed this adult Hocus Pocus-inspired Halloween gathering, I wasn't interested in simply putting up standard decorations. I wanted to build an entire experience—one that felt playful, theatrical, and completely committed to its theme. I wanted guests to step through the front door and instantly feel as though they had entered a refined, shadow-filled world inspired by the Sanderson sisters.

But more importantly, I wanted them to keep discovering hidden details long after they arrived. When looking at the final design of this gathering, it perfectly represents the exact standard of event design I want to be known for.

I Don't Design for Pretty. I Design for Wow.

There is a common tendency to define a successful home gathering solely by how pretty it looks in photographs. Of course, I appreciate high-end aesthetics. But beauty alone has never been what excites me most as a stylist.

I want the details to make people say, "Wow." I want a guest to notice something, look closer, and then discover an unexpected detail they hadn’t seen five minutes prior. I want the theme to show up in the most unconventional places, ensuring the decor, food, tabletop, and custom props all belong to the exact same story.

Because Hocus Pocus is a theme that speaks directly to my creative soul, I refused to stop at basic black, orange, and purple party supplies. I wanted to pull subtle elements directly from the world of the film and reinterpret them through a mature, modern lens.

The Details Were the Experience

One of my favorite parts of styling an event is taking an everyday object and transforming it into something magical.

  • The Animated Cauldron: This wasn't just a prop sitting on a counter. I engineered a custom cauldron with a spoon that actually rotated inside it. That unexpected bit of movement instantly captivated guests.
  • The Sanderson Spellbook: I hand-crafted a hyper-realistic, textured spellbook to give the film's lore a physical, heavy presence in the room.
  • The Curated Subtext: From themed graphic labels to a custom backdrop of the Sanderson Sisters.

Even the Menu Had a Design Role to Play

I never treat a food station or a kitchen island as a functional necessity; I treat it as an extension of the decor canvas. The food shouldn't just sit at the party—it must play a part in the story.

To achieve this, every single menu item was given an intentional, Hocus Pocus-inspired name. Guests grazed on Witches' Grass, Mary's Crab Dip, Broken Brooms, Spellbound Nachos, and Sarah's Sweet Seductions. I styled custom skull-shaped cornbread pieces to instantly catch the eye, alongside intricate desserts detailed with delicate sugar webs.

The crowning jewel of the display was a spectacular custom creation by my talented friend, Mimi the Cake Architect. It was an absolute showstopper that made guests stop and admire the artistry rather than simply slicing into it. By matching the food presentation to the room's atmosphere, the table layout became part of the evening's entertainment.

An Experience That Unfolds

The ultimate compliment I received that night had nothing to do with whether the space looked good. It was about how the guests felt while experiencing it.

Throughout the evening, multiple guests told me they kept discovering entirely new layers to the room. The experience unfolded sequentially. First, you noticed the dramatic backdrop. Then, you spotted the custom food typography. Then, you realized the menu items themselves were a culinary nod to the film. Then, you caught the texture of the spellbook and the motion of the self-stirring cauldron. There was always something else waiting to be found.

What I Want My Design Work to Be Known For

I want my work to be instantly recognizable for its intention. Looking through the gallery of this gathering, the creative direction remains completely timeless. The space had a strong personality, a distinct point of view, and custom details that gave guests an unforgettable night of discovery.

I want guests to wander through a home I have styled and say, "Oh my gosh, look at this." I want them to discover something new an hour after they arrived. I want them to tell their friends about the detail they almost missed. And I want the theme to feel so fully integrated that it ceases to be a collection of decorations and becomes a true, immersive escape.

That is what I set out to accomplish with this Hocus Pocus gathering. And I think I got incredibly close.
