The New Normal for the Events Industry

Hey Glammies! I hope you all are doing well and stay safe and healthy. I wanted to talk to you about the pandemic and the new normal for the events industry as a result of it. This blog post needed to be written because as much as we want things to be back to the way they were, they simply can’t be and may not be for a long time to come.

What do I know?

Many of my Glammies may not know that in addition to being owner of A Glam Good Time, I am also the Assistant Events Manager for a large recreation facility in Maryland. When I share my knowledge with you, I’m not just speaking without experience or education. Someone actually pays me on a bi-weekly basis to use my experience on a day to day basis.

Day after day as our facility reopens, the rental requests roll in. Clients are anxious to get back to hosting their events and getting back to normal. Here’s the thing, there is no going back to the way things were done prior to the pandemic.  The pandemic and the new normal for the events industry as a result of it is simply the way that we must operate for now. This means having those difficult conversations with clients and telling them that their events can’t proceed as they have done in the past. There are several reasons for this:

Capacity Matters

The recreation facility where I work is large which means our clients’ events typically attract thousands of spectators. Our largest space can hold approximately 5k people.  The most common event that we hold are sporting events which is why the numbers are so large. So as my clients call to reserve our venue for their event, they want to bring in the same numbers as before and they can’t. Not only is it not safe but our leadership team and the county won’t allow it. This frustrates these clients because many of these events are money makers for them. No one understands the need to make money more than us event professionals but money can’t outweigh safety.
